The Age 10 Sweep included measures of height, weight, head circumference, blood pressure, pulse, vision and hearing. Most of these measures were then repeated at age 16 and several were repeated in the Age 46 Sweep. This allows researchers to study trajectories of health from childhood into adulthood and how these are affected by other circumstances and behaviours throughout life.
Data from the latest 1970 British Cohort Study follow-up are now available from the UK Data Archive. The survey was conducted when the cohort members were aged 38 and used a telephone interview for the first time.
Celebrating 50 years of the 1970 British Cohort Study – Almost 5,000 children and mothers took part in the 22 months and 42 months sweeps, which explored the impact of foetal nutrition on early development.

From this summer, we hope to start catching up with our BCS70 participants to see how they’re faring in their early 50s.
More than 9,100 members of the 1958 National Child Development Study (NCDS) took part in the age 55 survey which ran between September 2013 and March 2014.
