Description

The study began in 2004 with cohort members in Year 9 who attended state and independent schools in England.

The study aimed to map cohort members’ journeys from compulsory schooling to university, training and, ultimately, entry into the labour market. The early survey sweeps, and in particular sweeps 1 to 4, were mainly focused on educational experiences, attitudes to school and involvement in education, expectations and aspirations. It also collected information on other aspects of cohort members’ lives such as risky-, crime- and anti-social behaviours, and health.

Interviews were conducted face-to-face, and parents were interviewed as well as young people.

The study was funded and managed by the Department for Education (DfE) at Sweep 1
