Description

The Age 5 Sweep of BCS70 was known as the Child Health and Education Study. The sweep aimed to examine physical, social and cognitive development and to look at experiences of pre-school education and health care.

Health visitors conducted interviews with parents (mothers in most cases) who were also asked to complete a paper questionnaire. Information was collected about family composition, housing, parental employment, cohort member’s health, family health, leisure activities and nursery/playgroup attendance.

Cohort members completed a number of assessments: Copying Designs Test, The English Picture Vocabulary Test (EPVT), Human Figure Drawing Test, Complete a Profile Test, Schonell Reading Test.

The Age 5 Sweep also included a brief medical examination where height and head circumference were measured.

Special features at age 5

Cognition

BCS70 began measuring cognitive development at age 5, and has continued to track cognition into middle age.

Cognitive assessments have subsequently been included at 10, 16, 42 and 46 with basic skills assessments in literacy and numeracy at 34. The results of these assessments form a rich resource for the study of the factors associated with levels of cognition and the impact of cognition on other domains of life.
