Two new reports on Millennium Cohort Data published

Reports investigating Infant Mortality by Andrew Cullis and Ethnic Minority mothers in England by Hiranthi Jayaweera et al from NPEU are available from CLS

Infant Mortality in the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) Sample Areas by Andrew Cullis at IOE investigates how many children in the birth cohort (from which the MCS was sampled) did not survive long enough to be included in the survey which took place at 9 months.  Not only would infant mortality within the birth cohort result in some cases with early deaths being missed out of MCS, but the possibility of differential infant mortality between social groups could bias the sample of survivors

Demographic and socio-economic characteristics of ethnic minority mothers in England by Hiranthi Jayaweera, Christine A. Hockley, Margaret E. Redshaw & Maria A. Quigley from the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit at Oxford shows that there is evidence that, like poverty and low income, ethnic minority grouping is a significant risk factor for poor health outcomes for mothers and babies, as reflected in infant deaths and maternal mortality, lower birth-weight and infant and maternal morbidity.
