The challenges facing first-time parents are examined in a new briefing paper from the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
The NSPCC paper, which draws heavily on statistics generated by the Millennium Cohort Study, also looks at new parents’ attitudes and experiences. Its authors are Dr Lisa Bunting and Dr Susan Galloway.
Among the topics they examine are parental mental health, domestic abuse, and parental alcohol consumption. Such problems can make it harder for parents to build healthy relationships with their babies, and increase the risk of abuse and neglect, the paper’s authors point out.
Read the full paper, “What the Millennium Cohort Study can tell us about the challenges new parents face: statistics for England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland”, on the NSPCC website.
