Leading UK social scientists met at Beijing Normal University on 17–18 December 2009 for discussions with Chinese researchers about data resources that underpin social research. The purpose of the event was to help to define the China strand of the ESRC’s four-country Pathfinders Initiative.
The event was attended by UK researchers, including Professor Jane Elliott, Research Director of NCDS/BCS70, who gave presentations on the UK Birth Cohort Studies.
Pathfinders is being developed by ESRC to encourage the secondary analysis of existing datasets, which may reveal issues of interest to policymakers, and to help build the capacity of developing countries to undertake world-leading social research.
Awards have already been made to 16 projects in Brazil and India. Calls for projects focusing on China and South Africa are planned for spring 2010.
