The age 46 sweep involved a 25 minute telephone interview. The survey sought to establish the key events and circumstance changes that had happened to cohort members in the time that had elapsed since they were last interviewed.

The main topics covered were: household composition, housing, relationships, births and other pregnancies, children and the wider family, employment, income, education and training, computer use, basic skills (numeracy and literacy), general health, smoking, drinking, exercise, experience of crime, social participation, identity and self-esteem.

Special features at age 46

Use of the telephone

The age 46 sweep was the first time that any of the UK birth cohort studies had conducted a survey via telephone. The survey achieved an 81% response rate, which was comparable with face-to-face response rates which had been achieved in previous sweeps.
