This one-day event will explore the use of AI in survey data collection methods and data analysis. It aims to bring together survey researchers and practitioners to share practical experiences, identify emerging opportunities, and reflect on the implications of using AI in survey research.
Date | Wednesday, 9 July |

Time | 10am–4pm |
Location | IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, 20 Bedford Way, London, WC1H 0AL |
Recent advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI and large language models (LLMs), are beginning to reshape how we design, implement, and analyse surveys.
These technologies have the potential to streamline workflows, open up new or improved ways for data collection methods, unlock new analytical approaches, and accelerate qualitative and quantitative data analysis.
The event will provide space for informal discussion and networking, and aims to build a community of researchers interested or working at the intersection of AI and survey methodology. The workshop aims to bring together researchers that have started to work on and develop expertise in this emerging field.
The keynote presentation will be by Professor Patrick Sturgis, LSE.
Show and tell (10 mins): Share successes, failures, or lessons learned when applying AI to any aspect of survey work.
Practical tips (15 mins): Demonstrate AI tools that you’ve found useful in your research.
Problem corner (10 mins): Present a challenge in survey design or analysis where AI might help — now or in the future.
National Centre for Research Methods (Gabriele Durrant, University of Southampton, Department of Social Statistics and Demography).
Centre for Longitudinal Studies (Liam Wright and David Bann, UCL).
This workshop is organised as part of a UKRI funded project on Digital Skills development.
