Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) dataset have been linked and open up new possibilities for health researchers. In this webinar we focus on what is included in these linked datasets, how to access them and how to analyse the data.
The Hospital Episode Statistics (HES) was linked to four of CLS’ cohort studies: the National Child Development Survey (NCDS), the British Cohort Study (BCS70), Next Steps study and the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS).The data is made available through the UK Data Service.
Want to discover more about the linked HES datasets available in the cohorts? This webinar will cover consent to and linkage of health records, data content and structure, disclosure control, available documentation and resources, data access, and guidance on how to analyse the data. There will be opportunity for attendees to ask questions.
Linkage of HES data provides the opportunity for the analysis of health variables which are not measured (or only measured crudely) in the survey data. Potential analyses could include exploring socioeconomic disparities in a variety of diseases and conditions or investigating life course risk factors for hospitalisation from certain causes.
The webinar will be valuable to those who:
• Are interested in the linked health data currently available in the cohorts.
• Want advice on accessing and analysing the linked health data via the UK Data Service.
• Have specific questions about the health datasets.
Please note, to access the linked HES data you must be based in a UK organisation, and be affiliated with a UK HE or FE institution. You will not be able to access this data from outside of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
