Doctoral Studentships available for 2008

The Bloomsbury Colleges consortium is offering twelve PhD Studentships, including one position analysing Millennium Cohort Study data. The Studentships start in October 2008, and will cover course fees (at the usual level for UK and EU studentships) and a student stipend.

The Bloomsbury Colleges consortium is offering twelve PhD Studentships, each of three years duration, to start in October 2008. The Studentships will cover course fees (at the usual level for UK and EU studentships) and a student stipend. They will encompass a wide range of topics spanning the biomedical and social sciences, reflecting the diversity of disciplines represented in the consortium.

The Studentship relating to the Centre for Longitudinal Studies is entitled “School experiences and educational attainment for children in rural compared with urban areas”.

The study aims to analyse the Millennium Cohort Study data on young children to address the following research questions:

• How do children’s experiences of education and schooling differ in the various rural and urban areas?
• How do children’s cognitive scores at ages 3, 5 and 7 differ in the various rural and urban areas, after controlling for a range of other known predictors.
• If differences are found in children’s development across rural and urban locations, can these be related to specific elements characteristics of the rural, urban or type of school arrangements in which they are located?
• Is the extent of social mix in rural areas an important predictor of educational outcomes; for example, is social heterogeneity and the associated social networks beneficial to low income groups in rural areas?
• Does children’s development show signs of differing when their families have moved between rural and urban areas?

The Bloomsbury Colleges are a consortium of six University of London colleges comprising Birkbeck (BBK), Institute of Education (IoE), London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), Royal Veterinary College (RVC), School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and The School of Pharmacy (SoP).
