Provisional figures show that 13,854 families containing 14,051 children took part in the Age 7 Survey of the Millennium Cohort Study. Fieldwork for the fourth sweep has now finished and initial numbers reveal that those taking part included 8,839 families in England, 2,015 in Wales, 1,625 in Scotland and 1,372 in Northern Ireland.

This survey involved interviews with resident parents, cognitive assessments and physical measurements of the cohort children and, for the first time, a self-completion questionnaire for the 7-year olds to answer themselves.

The survey also included a postal survey of class teachers and physical activity monitoring. The cohort children were asked to wear an activity monitor for seven days. The data collection for these elements will continue until late Spring 2009.
