About the event

This webinar gives an overview of data for the study of ageing available in four internationally renowned cohort studies run by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS). It also gives examples of research using these fantastic data resources.

Overview of ageing data

This webinar is aimed at anyone interested in life-course ageing research, both those new to the cohort studies as well as experienced cohort data users.

It aims to give an overview of the fantastic data on ageing available in the cohort studies and highlight the types of ageing research that can be undertaken, including the cross-generational life course approach to healthy and inclusive ageing.

We look at different areas of ageing and how the studies have tracked experiences at different life-stage transitions including the importance of early life experiences, from school to work and from midlife to retirement.

We showcase data on specific aspects of ageing, including how healthy ageing, changes in caring responsibilities and financial resources in retirement are measured in the cohort studies. We highlight data which have been captured consistently across different stages of the life-course and explain how you can access the data for your projects.

We also illustrate some of the seminal work on ageing previously conducted using the CLS cohort studies.

The CLS birth cohorts include:

  • 1958 National Child Development Study
  • 1970 British Cohort Study
  • Next Steps (born 1989-90)
  • Millennium Cohort Study (born 2000-02)

Webinar aims

  • Outline ageing data available in the CLS cohort studies, including life-course ageing, life-stage transitions and events
  • Illustrate some of the seminal work in ageing research using the CLS cohort studies
  • Highlight the types of ageing research that can be conducted using birth cohorts, from early to later life.
  • Illustrate the cross-generational life course approach to healthy and inclusive ageing
