Research round-up – April to September 2020

News
25 November 2020

What is the relationship between fathers’ mental ill-health and their children’s emotional and behavioural difficulties? And do children living in deprived areas have more behavioural problems?

Do government economic policies increase the likelihood that some citizens will become persistent criminals? And, can moving in with your partner help to make you more physically active?

Researchers from around the world have been using CLS study data to tackle these and other important questions.

Below is a round-up of over 100 new pieces of research that we’ve added to the CLS bibliography between April and September 2020. The research addresses pertinent questions in the fields of child development, education, social mobility and health and wellbeing.

The CLS bibliography is a searchable database of research using the 1958, 1970, Next Steps and millennium cohort studies. If you have a paper to add to the bibliography, please contact us.

Housing wealth matters for children’s mental health

A study led by researchers at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies has found that children growing up in families with expensive homes have fewer emotional and behavioural problems.

The study is one of the first to look at the links between family wealth and children’s development. The authors say that it is well established that children from higher income homes have, on average, fewer emotional and behavioural problems than children from families with lower incomes. But this new research shows that wealth – the assets a family owns – also plays a role in children’s mental health.

Comparing families with similar incomes, the researchers found that children from families with greater wealth, particularly related to home ownership, tend to have fewer emotional and behavioural problems than children from homes with less wealth.
