Dr Morag Henderson appointed Acting Principal Investigator for the Millennium Cohort Study

The Centre for Longitudinal Studies (CLS) is pleased to welcome Dr Henderson to her new role. Professor Heather Joshi, founding Director of the Millennium Cohort Study (MCS), will provide Dr Henderson with senior support.

Dr Henderson and Professor Joshi will lead the study from January to September 2016, when Professor Emla Fitzsimons is scheduled to return from maternity leave.

The MCS team, under Dr Henderson’s leadership, will continue the scientific development of the MCS Age 17 Survey, which is set to take place in 2018. Dr Henderson will also oversee of the completion of the Age 14 Survey, including the remaining fieldwork and preparation of the data for release to the UK Data Service.

Before joining CLS as Co-Investigator and Senior Research Officer for Next Steps, Dr Henderson was Research Associate at Cardiff University’s School of Social Sciences. Her research interests lie in explaining inequalities in education, with a focus on family resources, parenting, and childhood adversity, including bullying. She holds a doctorate in sociology from the University of Oxford, where she studied the relationship between family size and children’s educational attainment.

Professor Joshi is Emeritus Professor of Economic and Developmental Demography at CLS. She previously served as CLS Director from 2003 to 2010, and as Deputy Director from 1994. Professor Joshi led the team who founded the MCS, serving as Principal Investigator and Director from 2000-11. Her current research interests in MCS include residential mobility and children’s mental health. Professor Joshi was awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to Women’s Studies, and a CBE in 2015 for services to Longitudinal and Women’s Studies.
